Thanksgiving has gone to the dogs this year! Mr. R and I are going to be alone for Thanksgiving and I’m not liking it a whole lot. So, I decided that I was going to shake it up a bit. Not only will I cook a small feast for us humans, I will add a few homemade dog treats to bring our pups in on the celebration.
Mr. R and I have nine …. yep nine dogs. All of whom we love and adore as though they were our children. So this Thanksgiving, I decided I would make them up a few special treats for our small feast. Yeah it might sound a little kooky but when you’re use to preparing a meal for 10 to 20 people finding free time in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day is just disturbing.
This kooky little idea of mine came to me last weekend when I was making my Pumpkin Muffins and a batch of Applesauce. I accidently dropped a mixing spoon covered in pumpkin puree on the floor and before I knew it I was being bombarded by two of our dogs, Delila and Pugsly. They licked the spoon and the floor clean before I could reach for a towel. Then they sat there and begged for more. Huh? Who would have thought it, right? Well I also had some of the apple cores still on the counter from the applesauce and had to leave the kitchen for a few minutes. Next thing I knew Pugsly, in his big goofy way, managed to get the apple cores and share them with Delila. I never knew they liked apples either lol. Yes, he was reprimanded for being naughty but only after I stopped laughing.

In any event, my lightbulb lit up and I knew exactly how to fill that free time up. After doing a quick Google search, I came up with this lovely little menu for my kiddos:

What pup doesn’t love liver? Mine do … so much so they will turn circles, lay down and speak simultaneously. I know they will adore these and beg for more!

I am absolutely certain my pups will go gaga over these. In the Summer, I make ice cubes in my silicone cake pop mold to put in their water outside. I get so tickled because they will bob for ice cubes until every single ice cube has been had. I never would have thought to add a few veggies and use broth instead of water. I’m excited to see how they react over these little gems.

I know my older dogs will love these as they will be much softer than a regular dog treat and my young ones will get the pumpkin puree they love so much! I think I’ll use my mini muffin silicone pan for these to get more out of the batch. Yeah! I’ll have the opportunity to break out those silicone pans after all!
Now, I’m sure you have been asking yourself the question, “how does she wrangle those nine dogs and keep a clean house?” Well, let me tell you … I’m a slave to the mop and broom but for most of the day they are outside until we bring six of them in at night to sleep. The others prefer to sleep in their doghouse when the weather is nice. However, no one enters before spraying them with my homemade Stink-Away Spray lol. Here’s my super easy recipe:
- 1 cup Witch Hazel w/Aloe Vera
- 10 to 20 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
- 10 to 20 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
Add the above ingredients to a Pyrex measuring cup whisk until blended and pour into a clean spray bottle. Spray dogs liberally while rubbing into their coats.
